Toronto imam faces sex assault charges.(GM).By Julien Russell.A Toronto imam charged with sexual assault travelled under three aliases, the Toronto Police Service announced on Wednesday. Police allege that Mohammad Masroor, 48, used the name Junaid Salman in Hungary, Austria, Italy and elsewhere in Europe in the early 1990s, may have travelled under the name Abdur Rahim in India, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia in the 1980s, and was also known as Abdul Karim Abdul Aziz.
Mr. Masroor was arrested on Aug. 10 and police announced on Aug. 17 that he faced 13 charges, including sexual assault and threatening death, in connection with alleged offences between Nov. 1, 2008, and July 28, 2011. Mr. Masroor taught at an Islamic centre in the city’s east end. Police declined to provide further details of the charges on Wednesday. Constable Wendy Drummond, a spokeswoman for TPS, said that while police are not actively working with any other law enforcement agencies on the investigation, they want both the public and other agencies to know Mr. Masroor’s aliases to “determine if he’s connected with anything else.” Police have previously said that Mr. Masroor is the imam at the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society on Danforth Avenue in Scarborough. They have also said he taught the Koran to students at the mosque and at homes in the community since coming to Canada in 2008. “He is in a position of authority and he has used that to his advantage,”
Detective Constable Karen Armstrong told a news conference on Aug. 17. At that time, Det. Constable Armstrong said Mr. Masroor had travelled internationally, and worked at mosques in Bangladesh, Singapore, Sri Lanka and several countries in Western Europe. He was most recently in Michigan (Detroit) and Florida, she added. Ms. Armstrong told reporters the investigation involves five alleged victims, both male and female. She said police are in touch with other alleged victims, and believe there may be more abroad. She would not provide the ages of the victims or their relationship with Mr. Masroor, who remains in custody. “He is known to the victims, but I can’t go into any more detail than that as it is an ongoing investigation and I don’t want to jeopardize the safety of the victims in any way,” Det. Constable Armstrong said. Muslim members of the Toronto police are assisting the alleged victims, police said Wednesday. The Baitul Mukarram Islamic Society could not be reached for comment.Read the full story here.More here.
